I'm currently taking on new students for one-to-one lessons in philosophy online, offered at £25 per hour. If you have any questions, or would like to set up a free introductory session – where we can get to know each other a little and talk about your goals – please email me at emmabolton [at] protonmail [dot] com :)
Whether you're a school or university student, or just interested in exploring philosophical questions and learning the skills needed to answer them, I'd love to pass on my enthusiasm for philosophy and to help you develop your own perspectives, as well as ways of expressing them.
To say a little about my academic background, I've studied philosophy up to doctorate level, achieving a PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2019. My studies introduced me to a wide range of subjects, from metaphysics and epistemology to ethics. Logic, paradoxes and philosophy of language are of particular interest to me, and my doctoral thesis was about linguistic vagueness.
While I was studying in Sheffield, I got the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant, running seminars for courses such as Mind and World, Elementary Logic, and Death. I enjoyed fostering the lively discussions you often get in that setting, but have since found that one-to-one teaching is where I really flourish – I relish the variety of different places that these conversations can go, and find that people often have an easier time expressing their thoughts without the pressure of a group setting. After finishing my studies, I started to tutor students privately in lots of different capacities, ranging from offering support with a particular degree module, to discussing essay ideas for a high school writing competition, to an intensive course in advanced logic. Whatever your goals might be, I can provide fun and engaging sessions, tailored to your needs, with an emphasis on guiding you towards your own answers and approaches.
