Academic background

My educational background is in philosophy, having studied it in Nottingham (BA, 1st), St Andrews/Stirling (MLitt, distinction in coursework), and Sheffield (PhD). The main interests I developed over this time have been in "analytic" philosophy, maybe first among them logic and philosophy of language, as well as areas ranging from epistemology and metaphysics to ethics. My thesis was about linguistic vagueness. Since finishing formal education, I've continued to write in philosophy, working on questions about names and the connection between logic and the social world.

Musical background

Music has always been a special interest for me, and I first started playing the guitar in 2002. I've developed a wide repertoire in classical guitar specifically, and have worked on a unique mix of playing techniques over time, yielding a style that I feel is really my own. At the same time, I enjoy branching out into different musical styles, including folk, improvisation, and DIY/experimental. I also play a few other instruments (to varying levels of ability), including the recorder, Irish bouzouki, banjo, mandolin, and kalimba, and sometimes I sing – it's always fun to explore new sounds. I love performing anywhere and everywhere, but have a particular soft spot for the collaborative atmosphere of folk clubs and traditional sessions.

I also enjoy messing around with different kinds of art and writing, and I love making fictions of all sorts. When the weather is kind, I love cycling around.
